Thought For The Day – February 2007

Run the race of life with excellence and fight the good fight as if you are battling for your eternal life, because you are!

Until Jesus comes as He most certainly will
-Lyn Sahr

-1 Tim 6:11-16 NIV
But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time-God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

How do you find peace like a river when you are in one of life’s hurricanes? You must go to the one who gives shelter in the time of storms.

Until Jesus come as He most certainly will.
-Lyn Sahr

-Isa 25:4 NIV
You have been a refuge for the poor,
a refuge for the needy in his distress,
a shelter from the storm
and a shade from the heat.

The last day of February and Minnesotans are preparing for another huge snow storm, 12-20” more at Seekers Bay! After 17” of snow last weekend people are gathering food items at the store and other emergency things in case of the loss of electricity. People are busy preparing for the worst.

I have seen this type of preparation before for storms but I have never seen this kind of intense preparation for the second coming of Christ. It is good for us to make spiritual preparation for ourselves and sound the trumpet for others that Jesus is coming back. But most people will not begin to react with the same intensity for the rapture as they do a snow storm. It seems people pay more attention to the weatherman than they do the prophets or preachers.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-1 Thess 5:1-3 NIV
Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

To worship God is not restricted to a church worship service. Worship is an ongoing experience that extends outside of the walls of the church and into the halls of life. Today I worshiped God in my car, in a truck repair shop and in my home. Worship is about God’s worth no matter where we are and what we are doing. Unfortunately, often God is only considered worthy at church and we have forgotten God is everywhere.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 96:9 NIV
Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.

Winter storms are always interesting. Usually I have my own snow removal equipment ready to go but not this time. So I had to bring in someone to plow the 15” of snow and 30” drifts out of my driveway. Of course, because I was not a regular customer I had to wait so it was about 6:00 P.M. when I finally got plowed out. It was a subtle reminder that there are two things that I really dislike; depending on someone else and waiting. These are not good characteristics for anyone but I think it is a common trait of people. But as believers, it is imperative that we learn to embrace these as we must learn to wait and depend upon the Lord. So I had some good practice yesterday.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 37:34 NIV
Wait for the LORD
and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

“Lessons from a Cruise Ship Part 2”

When you first pull away from the dock in a cruise ship there are two revelations that go through your mind. The first is excitement about the vacation or adventure that awaits somewhere across the ocean in that tropical paradise you are heading too. Everyone stands on deck and waves at the crowds on land as your ship slowly moves away from the dock and heads into open water. Sometime about 30-60 minutes into your trip, with even the tallest buildings starting to become more like dots on the horizon the second revelation hits you. It goes something like this….”wait a second, I am leaving dry, solid ground behind me to head out into the unknowns of the ocean, what am I doing here? Is it too late to hop off and get my money back?”

Way too often as we “sail” through life, it’s easy to get excited and say to the Lord, “Okay I’m ready to take the next step, I’m stepping into the water so let’s go!” Taking the first few steps are always hard, like pulling away from the familiar shore in a ship. You know that there is something better over the horizon, something that God is planning for your “next step,” but it’s hard to leave the familiar behind (in my case land). God’s next step might not be what you necessarily have in mind, it could be something that might open you up to some pain, or (as in most cases) it’s a tremendous “God sized” opportunity?

Remember the disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee in Matthew chapter 14? A storm came up while they were in the boat in the middle of the night. Then there is this figure coming towards them walking on the water? Can it really be Jesus? Peter says “If it really is you Lord, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus calls to Peter, and while he is focused on Jesus he is able to walk on the water. But as soon as the focus shifted to his surroundings (the waves and stormy seas), Peter began to sink. But there is Jesus to reach out to him and help him back in the boat.

Where are you today? Are you really ready to follow Jesus at any cost? Now jumping off a cruise ship into the ocean probably isn’t what Jesus is calling you to do, but if he’s telling you to “jump in” and follow him with your life—are you ready? Is it time to leave the familiar behind and truly follow God’s calling in your life? Like Peter, when we focus on Christ, he will show us the way. But when we reach for the familiar, and not keep our focus on Jesus, it’s easy to start sinking again. Keep your eyes on Jesus today….and get ready for the “boat ride” of a lifetime!
-Garrett Novak

-Matthew 14:27-32(MSG)
But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.” Peter, suddenly bold, said “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water. He said, “Come ahead.” Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!” Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his had. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?” The two of them climbed into the boat and the wind died down. The disciples in the boat, having watched the whole thing, worshiped Jesus, saying, “This is it! You are God’s son for sure. .

In recent days I traveled to Fargo, ND to see an old friend and with the rest of my schedule at a breakneck pace I was unable to take the time to write as normal. However, today I have some thoughts of this week that I want to take up in one of my “Letters to God.” Have you ever written a letter to God to express your thoughts and questions about life and your circumstances? Maybe you should try it. These letters are written conversations with God that one might call prayer.

Dear God,

You know how hard it was for me to break away from the crisis’s what seems to encompass me everyday to go see my dear friend of almost 34 years who is gravely ill from some strange lung disease. About this and a few other things, I have some questions for you.

First, why would you allow for this man who has served you with such passion and sacrifice for so many years, who has been persecuted by the enemy and been held up to public humiliation for your cause and that of justice, who has provided food and shelter for hundreds of pregnant women so they had an alternative to abortion to stare in the face of death at age 64 with only two chances of life; A lung transplant or a supernatural healing by your hand. I know you are a jealous God and I see only reduced glory for you by the surgeon’s hand. And God I know and I have invested my life in the faith of the power of your son’s death and resurrection that you are able to do miracles as in the days of Elijah. And God, in these last days there is much despair and your church needs to see physical miracles to encourage the faint of heart, including the pastors. So, great and gracious God I ask that you would consider your dear son, my friend, and heal his body for your honor and glory. However, his life is in your hands and I know he will honor you in life or death as your will be done.

And while I am thinking of the plight of people I love, I have never understood why my mentoring pastor has been given the path of total physical care for his wife with MS. Lord, he is one of the Godliest men I know, as is she, both of them serving as examples to the greatest of heart. He has served you with such commitment and holiness that, frankly, it seems unfair for them to be experiencing such painful daily trials of life. But then again, knowing that they love you with all their heart, soul and might they have never asked for life to be fair. The peril ridden lives of many of the dearest saint’s troubles me as I am sure it troubles your tender heart. I know my ways are not your ways but what is to be gained by de-habilitating diseases that prevent people from enjoying the fullness of the prime of life? I am sorry God but this I do not understand unless it is to beckon our embracement of death and eternity itself.

Lord, I know that the miracles of Jesus did not transform all men. In fact, it would appear that many who worshiped him and threw palm branches before in a very short time participated in or at the least did not protest His crucifixion. I understand this from experiencing the hate and vengeance of those who once proclaimed my friendship and who were allies for your sake when evil suddenly entrenched in their hearts and they became filled with lies and slander, all in your name I might add. It is a strange thing in life how our friends can so quickly become our enemies, bent on “holy justice.” So Lord, it seems that more miracles would be in order or perhaps giving man the sight to see the miracles we are missing!

I don’t mean to bore you God but I have some personal ministry thoughts and questions for you today. One thing I have learned in the food distribution ministry with Ruby’s Pantry is that most people think they are poor, even though they have abundance. So I understand that when hundreds of people have read the ChurchMouse Chronicles “Thought for the Day” every day for the past ten years that they do not consider giving to support me in this ministry because they believe they cannot afford it. But God, receiving more or less than $500 in donations over ten years is hard for me to comprehend. Do you not nudge people’s spirits about the needs of ministries or do they just not listen?

While on the topic of needs, Lord I want to thank you for keeping us and helping us during these past several years of sub-standard income. Somehow we have not only survived but thrived of which I cannot understand. I also want to thank you for having such a wonderful family and friends. And we have been spared catastrophic injury, disease or hardships. For these things I am thankful.

But Lord, about four years ago you surprised me with a pickup load of food that has escalated to an 11,000 distribution center on two acres of land in the industrial park in North Branch, MN, three trucks to pick up food, an abundance of food to help people and all the expenses to go with it. I stand in awe at the 300-400 volunteers we work with throughout the rural communities in our area. They are terrific! I am humbled at the generosity of the companies that provide the food to us. But Lord I am perplexed by the lack of individual donations to Home and Away Ministries/Ruby’s Pantry. I am frustrated by the $200,000 – $300,000 in grants that have turned us down because we are a “religious” organization. Because we do this in your name we are opposed by those who oppose you, thus no grants. You really have a lot of enemies God and it has affected our ability to pay our bills and this ministry is at risk. We have a $26,000 replacement roof on our building that we have not been able to pay for resulting in the contractor placing a lien on our property and threatening to foreclose on the lien. We are now behind $4000 on utilities resulting in a disconnect notice in a few days. It’s hard to go without heat in Minnesota in the winter. And we have been issued a cancellation date for our liability, vehicle and building insurance as we have unable to pay an $8,300 annual premium as the company we bought insurance from failed to tell us they have no monthly or quarterly payment options. God, from all I know about you it is not your will that anyone would be untimely in paying their debts, especially ministries. Therefore, if you want this ministry to exist I ask that you provide the adequate and abundant funding on time that we may not be a stain on your good name. If it is not your will to fund this ministry, Father I ask that you would provide an immediate buyer for our building at a fair price that we may maintain integrity and close down this ministry with all debts paid and owing no one.

But God I ask that you would bless and provide in some way the 4,000 individuals we provide supplemental food for each month and the food shelves, churches and organizations we also provide food for. Father, this isn’t Nineveh but many of these people will always struggle to survive and feed their families even though they are doing the best they are able. Considering this, someone needs to carry on standing in the gap that so obviously exists. I ask that you would rise up the churches to carry on in our absence should you desire the termination of this ministry.

Father, forgive me for not understanding the human needs path that leads to the soul of man when I was younger that I may have had more of my life to give.

Amen

-Lyn Sahr

-Eccl 5:1 NIV
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

While listening to a retired pastor recently, I told a story as an illustration that I have heard and used a number of times. Interestingly, every time I hear the story it is a little different from my version. This retired pastor’s story was very long and detailed but the basic content was the same as mine and what I have heard from others.

So it is with our testimonies how Christ has touched our lives and taken us on a spiritual journey. Our stories may be someone different and some longer than others but the basic content is same; Jesus forgiven my sins and redeemed me with His shed blood on Calvary, lives within my heart and I will spend eternity with Him. So whether your story of salvation is long or short, dramatic or uneventful is irrelevant. What is relevant is that you have a relationship with Jesus and are a child of God.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!

When people neglect to worship God they stifle the most natural human function that creates a balance in our lives that helps us be the people God intended us to be. Without the worship of God, we are like toads croaking in pond in church on Sunday morning. You see, we can sing without worshiping God. We can praise without worshiping God. We can pray without worshiping God. So then, what is worship and how do we discover it?

Worship is natural act between man and his creator that brings man to a transparent state of oneness with God. God reveals us to ourselves through worship as we experience His holy presence. To discover this worship I suggest that in the privacy of your own home or a private place with just you and God that you kneel down before him and tell him all of your pain, your fears and disappointments. All of them and also confess your sins and acknowledge your sorrow over the sin you have committed in your life. This could take awhile and that is okay. God is not in a hurry and, in fact, has been waiting for you. As you share your most inner being with God He will meet you there and touch your life and… you will worship Him.

By the way, this has nothing to do with any denomination or what church you attend or if you attend. This has everything to do with you and the God who created all man in His image to have fellowship, to spend time with Him. We call it worship!

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-Ex 23:25-26 NIV
Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you,…

“Lessons from a Cruise Ship Part 1”

My wife and I just returned from a trip to celebrate our anniversary. Since we were celebrating a milestone anniversary, we went on a Christian Cruise. Having never “cruised” before, I was a bit nervous. And of course having our children remind us of the “Titanic” movie before we left didn’t help either!

When we drove up to the dock to load our ship I remember thinking, ”how can this 70,000-plus ton ship actually float, let alone sail across the ocean?” My brain knew that thousands had sailed before, and even Noah managed to navigate his “450 foot” long floating zoo and, since this was a Christian Cruise, I felt that God would allow us to return to port in just a few days.

The first item of business (after we found our room) was to bring our lifejacket to a main meeting area for a quick meeting on what to do in case of…“gulp,” needing to leave the ship in the event of an emergency. As my wife and I sat there, life jackets on and clasped, it reminded me of those who treat Christ as “insurance.” They accept Christ into their life, but then don’t seem to live a life that shows growth and life change.

I started thinking about my life as well. Was I living for God daily, or living for me? Was their growth and maturity in my life? Did I just use my heavenly father as a frantic life preserver, or did I walk with him through every stormy sea and fellowship with him as my LIFE Preserver?

Where are you today? Is there a storm on the horizon? Are you feeling battered and tossed around by your circumstances! Have you trusted Christ as your life preserver, but then gone your own way? Have you put down your basic instructions before leaving earth (B.i.b.l.e.) and done your own thing? The good news is Christ is standing there ready for you to come back. It’s never too late to grab hold and get those instructions again. He’s waiting for you!
-Garrett Novak

-2 John 1:9(NIV)
Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.

When God is lost, love is lost. Where God is found, love is found.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-2 Tim 3:1-5 NIV
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

If loving one another would increase bank accounts the world would be a much different place to live!

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-1 John 4:11-12 NIV
Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

On Valentines Day or any other day, the best way to say I love you is… to just say it!

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

-Deut 7:9-10 NIV
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.

The measure of the love a husband has for his wife is his desire to nurture her spiritually. When a husband loses this desire, he is out of God’s will. When he is out of God’s will he soon is out of the marriage emotionally and soon physically.

A husband’s love for God dies long before his love for his wife dies!

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-Eph 5:25-31 NIV
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church- 30 for we are members of his body.

Love is a choice. When a child is aborted a mother makes a decision not to love her child. How else can it be explained? Yes, love is a choice.

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-John 17:24 NIV
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

-Eph 1:3-7 NIV
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

-Heb 4:13 NIV
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

If you look for love in the wrong places you will rarely, if ever, find right love.

Samson did not realize the consequences of where he found his wife, until it was too late. Read the rest of the story in your Bible in the verses that follow the text below.

-Lyn Sahr

-Judg 14:1-3 NIV
Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. 2 When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”

3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?”

If love were measured by the pound, how much trouble would you have carrying your love around with you? Unfortunately, many people are weighted down with guilt and feel little burden of love!

How can one be burdened by love? Get rid of your guilt!

How can one get rid of their guilt? I thought you’d never ask!

-Heb 10:22-24 NIV
…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Being burdened by love is the way of the cross!

When I was a little guy in first grade, I thought I was in love with the girl classmate down the road. When I was in second grade I thought I was in love with another girl down the road who was 16 years old. I sure didn’t know much about love!

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are long past those years who don’t know much about love either. They forget that if you don’t love yourself you can never love someone else. When one doesn’t love themselves they eventually look at their mate through their own eyes of unhappiness and eventually harshly criticize him or her to feel better about themselves. This is a huge, destructive, ungodly mistake. God wouldn’t do that to us.

Being made in the image of God should be enough for us to know how important we are to Him!

Until Jesus comes as He most surely will!
-Lyn Sahr

-Gen 1:27 NIV
So God created man in his own image,

male and female he created them.

To whom, then, will you compare God?
What image will you compare him to?

As anyone who follows the game of football knows, this weekend is the big one…the Super bowl. My wife and I just returned from a vacation near Miami, Florida (where the Super bowl is being played in case you haven’t heard), and everywhere you turn you know what’s coming. There are street signs, banners, flags, billboards, radio ads, and more proclaiming Miami is hosting the big game.. The airport shops are filled with jerseys, hats, pennants, t-shirt, anything and everything for the Super bowl.

Since my home team isn’t in the big game, I have to admit, I wasn’t too excited for all the excitement around this southern Florida city. But, on our last day of vacation, while picking up the paper outside our motel room, my attitude changed. There, in big letters on the front of the Miami Herald newspaper, I saw it..the headlines said “The Right Way!” The big story was not about the game, but about how the coaches for the two teams (Tony Dungee and Lovie Smith) being sold out to Jesus, friends, brothers in the Lord, and putting their faith first. What a great witness! What an incredible headline, and it was one of those moments when the Holy Spirit hit me with the “spiritual two-by-four” and said ”Okay Mr. smarty pants, watch how God is going to be lifted up in Miami, and all across this country this week.” In fact, all week long there have been stories on the Internet, news networks, magazines and more about how the Lord is the driving factor in these men’s lives, and how they coach their teams.

I know one thing about this year’s Super bowl game. No matter which team wins or loses…..God will get all the glory from these coaches!

Now, I just have to figure out who to cheer for!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the fear of commitment is the end of wisdom.

It has been said that love is a commitment. If this is true, and I believe it is, we have done a poor job relaying the message to young people. Living together without being married, prevalent today, is a form of testing the waters rather than getting in the boat. Divorce is falsely made to appear as if it has no consequences and appears to be a little hiccup on the road of life. And the latest trend of “Friends with Benefits” is an insult to a holy God who intended a pure relationship between a man and a woman.

Love is a commitment, not a convenience!

Until Jesus comes, as He most surely will…
-Lyn Sahr

-Song 8:6-7 NIV
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.

This is the month of love. Everywhere we turn we will hear about flowers, candy, diamonds and a multitude of other gifts to be given to your sweetheart. Yes, it is a month of love! But the promotion is about the love of money for businesses. It is amazing the power of suggestion. Perhaps we could use some of this in the church world when it comes to eternity.

What would happen if we began to suggest to people what it may be like to spend eternity in heaven or hell. The power of suggestion could be used in a positive way with eternal benefits.

Some may say, “Hasn’t the church always done that?”

Yes, we used to do that. We called it “preaching!”
-Lyn Sahr

-2 Tim 4:1-5 NIV
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
