A recent quoted statistic says that the average individual annual giving by Christians to missions is $1.03. That’s less than the price of a 20-ounce bottle of Coca Cola plus tax! If we really expect to reach the lost for Christ we are going to have to start giving as well as praying!

Like most of men, I like a razor that gives me a comfortable shave. I have this one particular brand that I use but it is expensive, twice the price of other blades. Every time a company comes out with a new blade I try it thinking I can buy it for less. However, I always go back to the more expensive blade because I just can’t find anything else that shaves as good. And the expensive blade last twice as long, which makes it about the same price anyway.
Many Christians have the same problem with God. They keep trying other things to fill the void in their life. But nothing can do for us what God can do for us. Finally, after many trials and failures, they make a dedicated, eternal commitment to Christ.
This morning, after a frustrating shave, I made a decision to quit trying those other blades. They are cheap imitations, they don’t work as well, they frustrate me and they just plain don’t work.
If you are having frustration in your spiritual life, perhaps this is the day that you may make a renewed commitment to Christ and quit trying those cheap imitations!

Gambling has become a major thing in lives of millions of people. Most people lose. The odds are stacked against them. It has ruined many people financially and caused some to lose everything they own including their businesses and homes. It is a major cause of divorce and theft at the work place. But even with all the risks, people still gamble.
However, these people are really only low stakes gamblers compared to all the good people who are gambling their very souls and eternal existence. Get yourself a sure thing. Commit your life to Jesus Christ and receive Him as your Lord and Savior. When the last hand is dealt, you are a sure winner!

As I entered the office of a church that I was consulting for the other day the secretary offered me a doughnut. She had cut them into quarters. I looked at them, smiled and thought, “The poor things didn’t even make it until they could be eaten!” I was having one of those ‘everything seems funny’ days. I wasn’t used to seeing doughnuts quartered because, historically, my family tends to eat a whole doughnut!
It reminds me of how important it is in life to see the whole doughnut and not just the hole in the doughnut!

We read and hear a lot these days about leadership in the church solving the problems of evangelism, Sunday school, youth ministry, family, etc. However, the problem may be more about following than leading. Everyone is following someone, even leaders. The question is whom are leaders following?
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He called people sheep, a less than complimentary comparison. Sheep have never been known for their intelligence or good sense. There is tremendous pressure these days for leaders to follow the model of certain churches without regard to the culture, desires, practices and traditions of their local congregations. Too many leaders today are following the “herd” instead of the “Shepherd.”

1000 MARBLES
The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it’s the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it’s the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.
A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the kitchen with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it.
I turned the volume up on my radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning talk show. I heard an older sounding chap with a golden voice. You know the kind, he sounded like he should be in the Broadcasting business himself. He was talking about “a thousand marbles” to someone named “Tom.” I was intrigued and sat down to listen to what he had to say.
”Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I’m sure they pay you well but it’s a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. Too bad you missed your daughter’s dance recital.”
He continued, “Let me tell you something Tom, something that has helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his theory of a “thousand marbles.”
“You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years. Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now stick with me Tom, I’m getting to the important part. It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail,” he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round-up 1000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside of a large, clear plastic container right here in my workshop next to the radio. Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.”
“Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure if I make it until next Saturday then God has blessed me with a little extra time to be with my loved ones. “It was nice to talk to you Tom, I hope you spend more time with your loved ones, and I hope to meet you again someday. Have a good morning!”
You could have heard a pin drop when he finished. Even the show’s moderator didn’t have anything to say for a few moments. I guess He gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to do some work that morning and then go to the gym. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.” “What brought this on?” she asked with a smile. “Oh, nothing special,” I said. ” It has just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. Hey, can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles.”

We talk a lot about how to worship God these days but little about how people get to heaven and even less about heaven. The scripture doesn’t tell us too much that we can understand about heaven. So what could we possibly know about heaven that we could say about heaven that would cause someone to want to go to heaven?
I think of these reasons. When I walk into heaven I’m going to meet my great grandmother. Also have many great aunts and uncles there. I’m going to see my mother well and whole. No doubt my grandmother will be waiting at the gate greeting each of her family members talking a hundred words a minute. I will get to spend eternity with my wife, my children, my son in laws, and my grandchildren. I don’t think there is anything that gets better than that!
Funny thing, I don’t visualize missing my house, my cars, my money (if I had any) or even my computer. But I would sure miss the people that I love. I will never get used to watching people work so hard for the temporal and be such slackers when it comes to the eternal!

As fog suffocates Seekers Bay this morning I really missed the morning sunshine glistening off the ice and snow across the bay. It reminds me that there are so many people whose lives are being suffocated by sin and they do not see the “Sonshine” glistening off the lives of God’s people. If you want to lead people to Christ you must be a light that shines in the darkness of sin that surrounds and suffocates them.

This morning we went to visit the small country church my grandmother attended for over 60 years only to discover that it had been closed about three weeks ago. As I got close to the parking lot I noticed that the driveway had not been plowed. My wife noticed that the signs with the churches names on it had been covered with tarps. I felt a sudden queasiness in my stomach. My grandmother’s funeral was probably the last in that little church. The sadness in my heart was kindled by the visions of the old timers praying on their knees at the Wednesday night prayer meetings. Why are these churches allowed to die? I have a lot of thoughts but now is probably not the time to share them.
There are no guarantees that any small church can survive in these days of “glitter ministry!” This should be a reminder to everyone who is attending a little church that’s struggling, roll up your sleeves and go to work. Seek God like you never have before. Give until it helps. Become open to new people and develop relationships with them that matter. Treat your pastor with kindness. And if you don’t have a pastor, find one who is called and has a passion for ministry. If your church is constantly winning the lost it will never be lost!

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light, and God appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin.
The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. So, this the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down; his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all of his might. Each night
the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.
Since the man was showing discouragement, the Adversary (Satan) decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the weary mind: “you have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn’t moved.” Thus, giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man.
“Why kill myself over this?” he thought. “I’ll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort; and that will be good enough.” And that is what e planned to do, until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord.
“Lord,” he said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”
The Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, when I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all of your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to Me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed.
But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have.
Yet you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. Now I, My friend, will now move the rock.”
At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just a simple obedience and faith in Him. By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves mountains.

How much weight could a weightlifter lift if he or she did not practice everyday? So it is with Christians. To lift the weight of spiritual challenges that come our way requires daily practice through prayer, scripture reading and the fellowship of believers. Without “spiritual strength conditioning,” believers are not ready to meet the spiritual challenges that come unannounced.

If everyone you know got together and threw their problems in a pile and each person had to pick up problems to keep, most everyone would be scrambling to pick up their own problems again. Sometimes problems just happen. It’s called life. Other times we create them by poor decisions. Sometimes we create them because of who were are. Our personality might just rub our supervisor or employer the wrong way. But there are times that God allows certain things to take place in our lives that are problems but may be part of His plan for our preparation for what God has for our future. However, it is always difficult to discern what is the root of the problems we are experiencing.
People will often look at your life, like Jobs friends, and determine that they have the answers. The problem is, they have their own problems they can’t figure out! To discern the root of your problems you must seek God for the answer. Unlike the “OPLOC (Other Peoples Life Observers Corp),” God knows and by seeking Him you will find the answer. However, it doesn’t mean your problem will go away but God will certainly give you the grace to live with it.

In today’s national news it was reported that abortion causes an increased risk for breast cancer. Abortion is a tragedy that causes pain and suffering of many types.
Pregnancy may be a mistake but birth is never a mistake. I was born in an unwed mother home and my mother never felt that I was a mistake. Neither have I!
