Thought For The Day – November 2006

Thursday, November 30, 2006

There is an old hymn, rarely sang in churches today, with these lyrics;

“Everyday with Jesus, is sweeter than the day before.
Everyday with Jesus, I love Him more and more.
Jesus saves and keeps me and He’s the one I’m waiting for.
Everyday with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.”

Somewhere within that song is first of all a writer who delighted in the Lord. Secondly, there are lyrics that speaks volumes as to what the life of a Christian should be. And finally the question, how “sweet” is your daily walk with Jesus?
-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 37:4 NIV
Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

From time to time we are told by someone else how to pray. Jesus gave us what we call The Lord’s Prayer. And not so long ago the Pray of Jabez book swept the country. A lot of well meaning people thought it was some kind of magic formula for success. One of my favorite prayers is this prayer of David. Read it and be blessed today.
-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 119:35-37 NIV
Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.
36 Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain.
37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word.

The grace of God is magnified when we are in need of His grace!
-Lyn Sahr

-Prov 3:34 NIV
He mocks proud mockers
but gives grace to the humble.

Taking things into our hands instead of waiting for God’s hands is not a new thing but a rather common practice among Christians. This has proven to be true over thousands of years of “clinical trials.” This concept once actually produced a golden calf. Someone pretty important called this sin.
-Lyn Sahr

-Isa 53:6 NIV
We all, like sheep,
have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

What will Christmas bring to your house this year? More clothes, toys and food? For many that is the case but for thousands of others Christmas brings deep depression. It’s depressing to look at spending Christmas alone, having no money for gifts for ones children or no money for food for a wonderful Christmas dinner. So when you are planning your Christmas consider how you may be a blessing to others. It will be the best gift you will recieve!

-Ps 82:3-4 NIV
Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

To express gratitude or appreciation, that’s the dictionary definition of thankfulness.  During this season of Thanksgiving, it’s easy to be “selective” about what we give thanks for.

In today’s verses (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), Paul isn’t saying to thank God FOR everything, but IN everything.  There are plenty of things going on around us in the world today in which the enemy is having his way.  But, even though there are things which are hard to understand, or even accept at times, God can still work through them to create something good.

So here’s your assignment, no matter what trial you might be facing today…can you truly say “God, I’m thankful?”    Can you thank God for the trial and what His outcome will be?
-Garrett Novak

-1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (MSG)
Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.

Churches are armies who too often wound their own with “Friendly Fire.” The problem is they have no medics to come and tend to the wounded. Can you imagine the uproar in America if when a U.S. soldier was wounded in Iraq they just let them lay there and die.

Until we tend to our wounded it is hard to add new soldiers as no one wants to fight for an army who leaves you in the hands of the enemy when you are wounded to be captured, tortured or executed.
-Lyn Sahr

-James 4:1-10 NIV

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?  6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Today my wife Lonna celebrates her 57th birthday. I am thankful for her. She has walked with me through more trials in life than I can or choose to remember. She is a wonderful wife; mother and she may be the greatest grandmother ever. She makes little birthday cakes for the grandchildren, crochets them blankets, hats, dresses, plays with them outside, lets them help her make pancakes, bakes them their own personal miniature loaf of banana bread, reads to them stories until they tire and loves them all passionately. Every kid should be so fortunate.

Two nights before Thanksgiving we had a Pajama Party at our house for our three oldest grandchildren ages 5, 3 and nearly 3. The highlight of the evening was the “Grandchild Choir” singing happy birthday to grandma. For a moment I thought the heavenly angel choir itself was singing.

We won’t be leaving our children or grandchildren much of a financial inheritance but we will leave them a legacy of love that we pray will carry on for generations.

-1 Cor 13:8 NIV
|Love never fails.

Thankfulness is not an automatic for people. Many young people find their way into mid-adulthood before realizing thankfulness to their parents. I know that in this day of broken homes and melted families it can be difficult to be thankful through the open wounds of a broken heart. But like a lot of things in life, being thankful is a choice that if practiced enough becomes who you are.

P.S. Forgiveness is often the forerunner of thankfulness!
-Lyn Sahr

-Col 3:15-17 NIV
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Thanksgiving is celebrated with the thought in mind of things we are thankful for. The main focus is generally being thankful for the things we have. And certainly we should be thankful for these. But some consideration should be given to being thankful for the things we don’t have. Sometimes that is in the area of God closing doors in our lives that spared us from heartbreaking experiences. Or for being thankful we do not have the burdens some people carry with loved ones. The thought today is simply being thankful for God’s divine intervention, care and protection in your life. The next time someone complains about needing new shoes to add to their collection in their closet perhaps God will show them someone who has not feet!
-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 100:4-5 NIV
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

The ugly sisters, Hunger and Sin, are ravaging through your community. Sin is the worst of the two as she has no conscience at all. She cannot be subdued on your own, it takes divine help. But Hunger can be overcome with your help.

But isn’t hunger really sin? No, not unless you see hungry people and are able to help them but do nothing! I call this the sin of omission.

Remember, there may be a time you cannot get help but there is never a time you cannot give help!
-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 25:35-46 NIV
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Every Christian church that gathers together for worship services today has come together to express their love and adoration for Jesus Christ. It’s not about the pastor, the singers or the dancing wonders. It’s about Jesus Christ for He alone is worthy!
-Lyn Sahr

-Rev 5:12 NIV
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

We received our first snowfall about a week ago here in Western Wisconsin. I knew that there was one more pile of “stuff” from the yard I wanted to get put away before the snow came, but I didn’t get to it. But the wonderfully white, fluffy snow covered my last pile, and it was like the pile “disappeared.”

Of course, a few days later when the temperature rose and the snow melted to reveal the “stuff” right where it had been, my wife reminded me I was getting another chance to remove the pile.

Sin is like that, we can cover it up, and for a time it might even look like it’s not there. But, our human “sin” nature is mighty strong, and before you know it, the “sin” is back. If you have something that you have not confessed or strongholds that you are covering up, don’t be fooled. God knows! He wants to help you through it, and forgive you, but first you need to uncover your “stuff” and confess it to Him!

Isn’t it time to let God know that those piles of “stuff” in your life have been covered up too long and they have got to go?
-Garrett Novak

-Psalm 51:6-7 (NASB)
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

-Ps 105:12-15 NIV
When they were but few in number,
few indeed, and strangers in it,
13 they wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
14 He allowed no one to oppress them;
for their sake he rebuked kings:
15 “Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm.”

The life of luxury will never give comfort anyone unless it is accompanied by a life in Christ!
-Lyn Sahr

-2 Cor 1:3-5 NIV
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

Potato salad without potatoes cannot be called “Potato Salad!”

Some time ago I was eating at a salad bar and they were potato salad. Because I really like potato salad I took a nice heaping spoon full. I noticed that there didn’t seem to be any chunks of potatoes. So I tasted it and it appeared to have all the ingredients but the potatoes. The cook had forgotten to add the potatoes!

So it is with many Christians, they forgot to add Christ. Christians without Christ cannot be called “Christians!”
-Lyn Sahr

-Col 1:10-14 NIV
And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

You me ay feel like thfuture of the planet rides on your shoulders but that is far from the truth. Lighten up and enjoy God’s creation. You are not alone under His care and, even more important, He didn’t put you in charge.

Enjoy living in the hand of God’s grace.

Hate and Heaven Don’t Mix! The evil heart is cankered to the fullest when hate is allowed to reign in ones life. But hate and hell seems to go hand in hand.
-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 5:21-24 NIV
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

Yesterday we distributed food to 383 families in a two hour period. It was amazing to see so many people came through the line in such a short time. We also helped provide food for distributions in two other communities which had 180 and 160 people. Between the three distributions 713 families were provided food. Thursday we are doing a special Thanksgiving distribution in a small NW Wisconsin town and we will bring in 28,000 pounds of food. We expect up to 500 families to come. But what took place at our distribution yesterday will be remembered by all of us for a long time.

A young mother with two small children came to the registration table and asked if she could go though the line even if she didn’t have any money (We ask people for a $12 donation). Of course she was told that would be fine. As she turned to go into the line to pick up food one of her children asked her, “Mommy, will we be able to have something to eat now?” Her mothered answered. “Yes.”

Many people wonder why we are in the food ministry. Well, there is your answer.
-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 19:14 NIV
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Today is Veteran’s Day here in the United States. It’s a day set aside to remember the sacrifices of all the men and women who have fought in every war our nation has been in. Armistice Day was first proclaimed in 1919, and the name “officially” changed to Veteran’s Day in 1954, by President Eisenhower.

There is a lot of history behind “Armistice Day,” and the sad thing is that if you ask many young people today, statistics show that very few remember why this holiday was first proclaimed. By the way, if you’ve forgotten…it’s the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, or the agreement to end the fighting for World War 1.

There are a lot of Christians who have done incredible things for the cause of Christ throughout history too. No doubt you’ve heard of Paul, John, Peter and Stephen? How about Martin (Luther), Jim (Eliot) or Billy (Graham)?

Today is a great day to remember (and thank God) for a Veteran in your life, and while you’re at it, remember the great Veteran’s of the Christian Faith.

Thank you Veteran’s for the freedom’s we have today!

-Hebrews 11:1-2 (NIV)

It requires wisdom to know how and when to help people, Godly wisdom. And giving up on people is not a realistic option. When we seek Godly wisdom to discern the needs of people, we will be able to know how we can help them instead of enable them. Then we will not be so quick to give up on helping them. After all, God has never given up on us!
-Lyn Sahr

-Prov 19:11 NIV
A man’s wisdom gives him patience;
it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

Church leadership is important, very important. And what is important about it is that it must be experienced, committed, mature believers. Let me explain.

Two of my brothers in laws are farmers. When they let the cows out of the barn after morning milking there is always the idea that they are supposed to come home, back to the barn, when it is time to milk again and eat grain. Now there are always some lead cows that find their way home and others that follow the leaders.

But some farmers don’t have “lead” cows and so the herd doesn’t know their way home. So the farmer has to walk or drive something out into the pasture and look for his cows and steer them home day after day. It feels very futile to the farmer to have such stubborn untaught cows and no leadership cows to lead them home to the barn. If the farmer didn’t go out and get them the cows would just stay in the pasture, never going to the barn.

So it is with the church. Without good leadership the herd just can’t find their way to the barn for good grain or… home!
-Lyn Sahr

-Deut 6:5-9 NIV
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Today I went in to a barber shop and heard an entire story of someone’s short two year marriage and pending divorce all in one haircut. I found it amazing that one could sum up such a sacred relationship in 15 minutes. It reminds me of when someone accepts Christ with unrealistic expectations and soon becomes disillusioned and sums up their relationship to Christ, “I used to go to church.” What they are really saying is, “I tried to believe in God but He disappointed me.” There is a big difference between trying to believe in God and submitting to God and we need more sermons on the joy of submitting to His loving way.

More often than not, like their faith, people pull the plug on their marriage too soon and don’t give it a chance to mature. Then again an old Methodist pastor once told me, “Sometimes the sin is in the marriage and not in the divorce!”

Make your life long choices carefully… and your eternal choices even more carefully.
-Lyn Sahr

-Deut 30:19-20 NIV
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

God never gives bad gifts to people! Holding on to what God gives you is determined by your desire to keep it. Too often God blesses us and we are too impatient to hold it long enough or tight enough to recognize the blessing and we discard it for “our own ways.” In the end, this leads to standing empty handed before God. Then there will be room to hold His gifts!
-Lyn Sahr

-Prov 3:5-8 NIV
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.

Christianity comes in different ways from the conservative lifestyle of the Amish to the most liberal denominational church and many, many groups in-between. How then is it possible for anyone to explain to another person what being a Christian is? To those with different doctrines to those with different lifestyles it creates mystery and confusion for the unbeliever. But I have the answer; love never fails!
-Lyn Sahr

-1 Cor 13:1-8 NIV
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails.

The tragedy in Colorado Springs cannot be ignored. Again a powerful pastor of a large evangelical Christian church has fallen. It should stand as a reminder to all of us that sin turns even the best of Christians into “sinners!”
-Lyn Sahr

-Isa 53:6 NIV
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

It was rough at our house this week, as the 18-year old son of some family friends was killed in an automobile accident.  We have known this family for nearly 15 years, lived close to each other, our children used to play together, and we even attended church together.

There were so many teens at the funeral, and the church (which is an old movie theater) was packed.  Throughout the celebration of this young man’s life that day, his friends and family read statements about him.  His father’s statement was the most incredible one about his son, telling the story of when this boy accepted Christ while in grade school.

No matter what the circumstance, God can use it for good.  I know that seeds were planted that day, relationships rekindled, and this young man’s life was used by God in ways that we won’t realize until we get to heaven.

Remember, God’s plan is perfect!
-Garrett Novak

-Romans 8:26-28 (MSG)
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

Heaven isn’t for everyone. It is no different than all the other lifestyle choices we make with one exception, time. Earthly alternative lifestyles are temporary but eternity is forever.

Yes, I know. It’s that fire, weeping and gnashing of teeth thing again… forever. And forever is a long, long time!
-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 25:13-30 NIV
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’

21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The greatest part of being a Christian is the retirement program. Can you imagine that forever God is going to take care of us? What a retirement program, mansions, streets of gold and eternal worship never ending.

Now the alternative doesn’t sound so great, the fire, the weeping and gnashing of teeth thing.

Choices! Choices! Choices! Have you made yours?
-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 13:49-50 NIV
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

-Rev 21:15-27 NIV
The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 He measured its wall and it was 144 cubits thick, by man’s measurement, which the angel was using. 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.  21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Giving thanks is always easier than getting thanks! The human tendency is to not appreciate the little things that add up to what we call “our lives.” Therefore, may acts of kindness never receive a thank you. Expressing human appreciation to others is probably a tip-off as to ones attitude of appreciation to God. Take the test. Have you missed any opportunities to say or be thankful to others today? Have you missed any opportunities to express your thankfulness to God today?

Give thanks with a grateful heart!
-Lyn Sahr

-1 Thess 5:16-18 NIV
Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
