Thought For The Day – September 2003

Tuesday, September 30, 2003

As we close the first month of fall and head toward winter I am reminded of how cold it is in hell. I know that many people talk about hell being hot but that isn’t going to be the worst part of spending eternity in hell. The worst part will be how cold hearts will be as a result of being without the presence of God. The torture of the fire of hell will not compare to the torture of the loneliness of hell!

-Lyn Sahr

-Luke 16:19-31 NIV
“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'”

Last night was one of those rare times when my schedule was of such that I was able to watch a movie on television. I don’t remember the name of the movie but Tom Stelleck played the role of a divorced father in a small farm in Idaho. His ex-wife, who was a big city lawyer, called one day and wanted to bring the daughter there for the summer. Little did he realize what a dark person his daughter had become. Everything ended with the family back together but that wasn’t the part that struck me. What really struck me was what a terrible effect the environment the daughter was living in had on her. It turned her from a sweet country bumpkin into someone dark and evil.

Too often people take little consideration into what effect it will be on their family where they move. Usually people relocate for a job or a better job, the greener pastures if you will. But the greener pastures can have devastating effects on a family, especially the children.

When Abraham and Lot split up, Abraham gave Lot his choice of land and he chose Sodom and Gomorrah. The rest is history (Read Genesis 13-19). Lot received the best land while Abraham received the best of God!

You can buy a house anywhere but a home is priceless!

-Lyn Sahr

-Gen 13:10-18 NIV
Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”

18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.

This past Sunday I was visiting in a church where our Mission Team had ministered almost two years ago. The service was truly a blessing. It was wonderful to see a full church, people in love with God and worshipping Him with all their heart.

Out of the window I could see the mountains. It reminded me of the greatness of our God. These mountains look pretty big to me, but they fit in the palm of His hand. And when I consider how big the mountains are, and how small we are in comparison, it is a wonderful thing to know that God is concerned about each and every aspect of our lives. We are never alone.

As I was thinking about the beauty of the mountains, I was reminded of the song that says, “Mountains will bow and the sea will roar at the sound of His name”. (Shout To The Lord, 1993, Darlene Zschech, Hillsongs/Australia). His name is wonderful, worthy of all praise. Jesus reminded us that if we fail to praise His name, the rocks and all of nature will take over. Let us truly be a people that worships and praises our God and let the rocks remain silent.

-Ardis Rivera

-Psalm 19:1-4
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

It’s harvest time in northwest Wisconsin and the apple orchards are brimming with the crunchy, sweet fruit.

But have you ever thought about how much Christians are like apples?

The apples have to stay on the tree until ripe (we have to wait while God “grows” us).

If an apple is picked too early it isn’t as “sweet” as if was allowed to ripen (we need to “wait” upon the Lord, and his timing).

If an apple falls to the ground it can still be used for good things (if we stray away from God he reaches out to us and can turn our mistakes into good).

An apple can be rough and scratched on the outside, but inside is sweet and full of goodness (God knows our heart and looks within us, man looks on the outward appearance).

So when you bite into an apple during this harvest season, take time to thank the creator for giving us such a wonderful example of his love for us.

-Garrett Novak

-Gen 1:11-13 NIV
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning–the third day.

“By grace are you saved through faith, not of works, lest any man boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9

Sometimes this verse is misused to deny that we have any responsibility to do good in our world. If we are not saved by our good works then why should we be involved in doing good. Shouldn’t we just spend time worshiping in our sanctuaries and in our homes?

Matthew 5:16 “…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Balance the fact that it is not your good deeds that save you with the fact that others are drawn to God by seeing your good works. Take the responsibility to show God to others by how you live and how you serve.

A dear lady in our church came into my office today and gave me the good news; her cancer was in remission after only two chemotherapy treatments. Unusual after only two Chemotherapy treatments? Yes. A miracle? Perhaps, especially considering the hundreds of people and the thousands of prayers that have been brought to the throne of grace for her.

Never shortchange the power of prayer or you may find yourself a day late and prayer short!

-Lyn Sahr

-James 5:13-18 NIV
Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

In the early and middle 1900’s most people dressed more conservatively. Yesterday I was in downtown Minneapolis and I saw several people making dramatic fashion statements. Some had tattoos that resembled some pretty horrible stuff. Some young ladies wore clothes that were far more revealing than would want my daughters or wife to wear. And then I saw young men wearing their pants so low that their back pockets were at the back of their knees! And we call it a fashion statement.

However, I differ with the concept because the way we look tells the world who we are. In other words, it’s not a fashion statement but rather a lifestyle statement. A young girl who exposes much of herself says she is promoting her flesh! A person with tattoos is saying I want to be noticed and I belong to someone or something that is reflected in my tattoo. Historically tattoos have been a sign of belonging to someone or something! A young man who is wearing “squatty” pants doesn’t mean he has short legs but rather that he is associated with gangs.

The point here is that what we wear and how we look is more than a fashion statement. It’s a lifestyle statement.

Is your lifestyle statement something that is pleasing to God?

-Lyn Sahr

-Col 3:1-4 NIV
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

One of the hardest things in life is to gain a proper perspective. Many people see themselves, and especially their hands, as huge. They think they can carry all kinds of things in their hands. Some are so foolish that they think they can carry God in their hands and use Him how they see fit and at their convenience. We forget so quickly that our lives are carried in God’s hands, including every day we live and every breath we take.

One doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to see how small our hands are. Most people cannot carry their own weight with their hands!

How is your perspective today?

-Lyn Sahr

-Eccl 5:15 NIV
Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb,
and as he comes, so he departs.
He takes nothing from his labor
that he can carry in his hand.

When we consider the greatness of God, it seems like we all have a dream of what He can accomplish through our lives. However, many people only dream and never realize the greatness of what God could do in them. You see, too many people just dream and never wake up!

-Rom 13:11-14 NIV
And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

I have been living in Mexico for a little over a week now. This past Tuesday was Independence Day in Mexico. My understanding is that at midnight on the 15th, there is the shout of independence which is the beginning of the holiday.

As Christians we have been given freedom: freedom from sin, freedom from the bondages that the devil puts on us. Yet too many of us keep very quiet about this freedom. We tell ourselves that our “religion” is a private thing and we don’t let anyone know of the freedom that we have in Christ.

We can take a lesson from the Independence Day celebration in Mexico. Let’s give the shout of freedom so that our friends and neighbors know of the freedom that is available through the blood of Jesus Christ. Are you ready to do a little shouting today?

-Ardis Rivera

-Galatians 5:1 NIV
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

In a world where greed, illicit sex, drugs, crime and violence have become a way of life, I still choose the peace that passes all understanding!

-Phil 4:7 NIV

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Sometimes in this world we face the decision of civil disobedience. Not that it is an easy choice, but for some it is a necessary choice. When governments call themselves sovereign it is that they are independent and all powerful as a nation here on earth since their formation as a country. But God is sovereign over the universe, the heavens and the earth, always has been since before the creation of the world and always will be forever and ever. Perhaps the decision of who to obey and serve is easier to figure out than many realize!

-Luke 16:13 NIV
“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

Miracles, do you really believe in them? Most people will say yes but when you ask them name one that they have seen there is usually a long pause and often an answer of “no.” Miracles are something we have a very difficult time recognizing, even when they exist.

Years ago tele-evangelist Oral Roberts had a theme for his television ministry called, “Expect A Miracle.” I was never a great fan of his ministry or any of the other flamboyant miracle workers of the airwaves. However, I have also realized that without miracles or recognizing them we live in a world that really lacks hope. We have hope in Jesus Christ for eternal life, and that is wonderful and satisfying. But frankly, life is difficult for most people and they really need to see the hand of God work in a miraculous fashion from time to time.

Last year when I was preaching in a little church in a poor area outside of Monterrey the pastor asked me to pray for his grandson who was recently born and spent the first three weeks of his life in the hospital with extreme, life threatening asthma. It was a very moving time as the pastor and his wife wept as we prayed for the little boy who was wheezing like I had never heard before. It felt like death was eminent. But in that moment God changed the course of the little guys life by touching his body and making him well. When I was at his house last week he was just as normal as any little boy. Even though I am not some wild faith healer filling auditoriums with the hopes of the supernatural I must testify that God really healed this little guy.

Then I must ask the question, “If we hadn’t prayed would the little boy still have asthma?” I don’t know the answer but it causes me to understand that if we don’t pray for miracles or don’t expect them in our lives they probably won’t happen. I would rather expect a miracle and be disappointed sometimes than to never expect a miracle and be disappointed all the time.

The same God that healed this little boy is able to perform a miracle in your life as well. Perhaps even the most conservative of us should “expect a miracle” today! The only thing you have to lose is your burden!

-Lyn Sahr

-Matt 14:14 NIV
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

When the spirit of the Lord moves, there is peace. Moving Ardis Rivera to Mexico to direct the ministry of Home and Away Ministries there has a sweet aroma of peace!

On Thursday we went out to Pastor Gonzales church. There was a great time of praise and worship and then I spoke. The little church sets in a rather remote village outside of Monterrey. Pastor Gonzales and his family have a very special place in my heart. Last June when we were there we prayed for his new grandson who was only a few weeks old. He had been kept in the hospital for three weeks because he had severe asthma. We were asked to pray for him and I will never forget the feeling that I had when I held this little baby and he wheezed for breath. I thought, “This little guy cannot live like this.” We earnestly prayed and asked God to heal him. When we came back now he was perfectly healed from all asthma symptoms and has been ever since the night we prayed for him before. Yes, God still heals!

Ardis rented a house on Thursday and we went to the border (140 miles) to purchase new appliances on Friday. Appliances are about 40% cheaper and appear to be higher quality in the states. The house has three bedrooms so that when individuals, families or couples come in they will be able to stay at the house. A lot of people think that things are cheap in Mexico and some things are. You can buy some of the best pastries you have ever eaten for 10 cents each. You can eat a great Taco dinner with a Coke for $2.50. But razor blades are 25% higher than here, even at Wal-Mart. And gas is about $2.70 per gallon. I stand in awe at how the Mexican’s make financially but then I remember, many of them don’t. There is a lot of poverty!

Saturday we met with fifteen pastors and wives and I shared the vision with them of Home and Away Ministries. All of them too the information sheets to fill out for their churches and themselves to help us better match them up with a sister church. Now we must turn our attention to churches here in the states who desire to be involved with having a sister church in Mexico to have fellowship and share the burden of ministry with in both churches. What a thrill it will be for the people in churches to travel to Mexico and develop relationships that will last for years. Some of our Mexican pastors will come to the states to preach in our American churches. God is up to something good here and it will be terrific.

Saturday night we went up to a house that overlooks the entire city that used to be for the Bishop of Monterrey. It is a beautiful place that seems to put things in perspective as to the sixe of Monterey, the opportunity of ministry and the great need that exists there.

Sunday I preached in four different churches and Bob Espeseth, board member for Home and Away Ministries preached in two. We had some great services and the Lord was truly there. We left Monterrey at Midnight Sunday night and arrived back in Minneapolis at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday morning. I am thankful for God’s mercy and grace as He continues to bless us by fulfilling our dreams. Thank you for being part of that!

-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 73:23-26 NIV

Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.

It is actually Thursday at 12:45 A.M. when I am writing this. We just got back from an evening service with Pastor Cruz, a short taco stop and now back to the motel. I brought a short-term outreach ministry team to his church in November of 2001. His was the first church our team ministered in. The church was basically a bunch of poles with some tarps hung on them in case of rain. However, they were in the process of building a new sanctuary when we were there before. I was pleasantly surprised to see it finished.

The sanctuary was about two thirds full for the service, which was somewhat in excess of sixty people. I thought this was quite good for a Wednesday night until the 50 plus children entered from the old “open air” church at the end of the service. The ladies all got up front and did a special number “When the Roll is Called up Yonder.” There were about 15 ladies and there were about three songbooks. Most of the women sang all four verses from memory. They didn’t have song sheet inserts; choir music, overhead projectors or LCD projector. No bells. No whistles. Just Praise and worship. God is really blessings this church.

This church is in a very poor area of about 3000 people on the edge of Monterrey. By poor I mean there are many homes that have no floors (except dirt) and they are constructed from scrap construction material and some cardboard. But when I preached there tonight I didn’t see their poverty but rather their riches because of their deep love for God and the joy they experience because of it.

Again I say, in America we just don’t get it but God does!

James 2:5-6 NIV
Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

After traveling all night and day we arrived at the Mexican border in Laredo, Texas at 2:00 a.m. We went through customs and got our visas without any problems. Then we went to get our car permit and we had a little surprise. We are pulling the “tow dolly” trailer with Ardis’ car on it. The trailer is borrowed from someone and we brought the normal notarized permission papers to take it into Mexico. However, they changed the rules and wouldn’t let us in without the trailer being titled in my name. So we had to go back across the border to the court house in Laredo and reregister the trailer and they didn’t open until 8:00 a.m. Because we didn’t want to back through customs and risk possible further delays Bob and I walked the bridge across the Rio Grande and the dozen blocks uphill to the courthouse. We got the title/registration processed and headed back across the border to get the permit for the trailer only to find that the trailer had to be in the same name as the vehicle that was pulling it! After some debate we headed back across the Rio Grande and walked the hill once again to register the trailer in Bob’s name because the truck is in his name. When we got back to the Mexican officials to get the trailer permit they informed us that the truck and trailer had to be registered as one together so Bob’s registration fo the truck alone was no invalid and we would need a new permit for that too. We finally got on our way at 11:00 a.m. And you thought your life was complicated!

The rest of the story! Last week an old knee injury I had from the 1972 flared up so severely that I was literally unable to walk. The pain was so severe that it made me nauseous. I received and injection in my knee before I left with hopes that the swelling would go down and relieve some of the pain. Then of course, 30 hours straight on the road and sleeping on hard benches at the border. I could have done without the two walks across the border!

But then again I remembered the scripture, God doesn’t give us any more than our knee can handle!

-Lyn Sahr

-2 Cor 12:7-10 NIV
To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

We, myself, Ardis Rivera and Home and Away Ministries board member Robert Espeseth have been driving all night heading to Monterrey, Mexico to help Ardis move there, initiate the office and meet with pastors to implement the Great Commission Alliance in Mexico. As we head into Texas it seems impossible that we still have so far to travel.

It reminds me of our spiritual journey. Even after we have been traveling through this life with Jesus for what may seem like a long time, we still have so far to travel!

Please keep us in our prayers as we have many obstacles to overcome and are in need of adequate funding to do this properly and be effective.

-Lyn Sahr

1 Peter 2:4-6 NIV
As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Sunday, September 7, 2003

As you read this, I am going through the last service (for awhile) with my church family, going to a commissioning service and saying farewell to many dear friends. After the afternoon service, I am leaving for Monterrey, Mexico, where I will be living for awhile, working with pastors there, helping them in their ministries. I will continue to be writing the Sunday Thoughts For The Day, but once I get settled, they may sound a little different, since I will be living in another culture and country.

There are people who would say that I am silly to venture out like this. But when God puts something in your heart, it is hard to ignore it. As hard as today will be, I am excited about what is waiting for me, and I am honored to be a part of what God has mind for this ministry. And I am sure that I will many things to share once I get settled in. So, keep me in your prayers.

-Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I confess. I’m kind of old fashioned. I find it hard to see young peoplewith tattoos all over their bodies. I know it doesn’t reflect the heart butin years past tattoos were primarily worn by people whose lifestyle was notvery pleasing to God. Historically, many aspects of our personal appearancedo reflect ones heart. What do people see when they look at you? Does youroutward appearance reflect your inward heart? It’s worth praying about.

As I heard an old timer say, “If God wanted us to be full of tattoos our skin would have come that way!”

When the world needs a better man they look for someone who is attractive and has sex appeal. When God needs a better man He looks for someone with a pure heart and faith appeal! No matter how appealing someone is on the outside they can’t get past heaven’s gates with a defective heart!

As I passed my brother in law’s farm today I saw him in the field spreading manure behind his tractor. The dust was flying all around him. I couldn’t help but think of how in our lives when we become spiritually dry that it is about as miserable as pulling a manure spreader in a dusty field. Smelly and suffocating for everyone in our path!

-Lyn Sahr

-Ps 24:3-5 NIV
Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?

who does not lift up his soul to an idol
or swear by what is false.
He will receive blessing from the LORD
and vindication from God his Savior.

Every once in awhile God does something that is so special that it is difficult to ignore it is His hand at work. He is doing things like that right now in our ministries. Pine City Community Church, the church that I started in August 2002, has just purchased an 8000 square foot building. I leave for Monterrey, Mexico next Sunday afternoon to set up the office for Home and Away Ministries. And the ChurchMouse Chronicles is growing and God continues to use the “Thought For The Day” to touch people lives. It is exciting!

But I must tell you that only a few weeks ago things looked a little bleak. Our first summer in the church brought inconsistent attendance, which is always a little unnerving for a pastor. Home and Away ministries has no financial base and the car donation program wasn’t having much success. And the ChurchMouse wasn’t experiencing much growth, even for the new “Truth For Youth.” But we just kept doing the things we could do and left the rest in God’s hands.

And then it seems like the floodgates of heaven opened and here we are. The church has a new building, Home and Away Ministries has a number of donated vehicles to sell, use or give away, the ChurchMouse is picking up new subscribers and I will finally be able to publish the daily devotional book, “Sunrise on Seekers Bay.” And we are opening our office in Monterrey, Mexico this month!

Sometimes we forget that God knows how to bless His people!

-Mal 3:10-11 NIV
