Truth for Youth – May 2004

Monday, May 31, 2004

I have been studying the Word of God and have discovered that faith is defined by obedience. Did you know that faith is not only a declaration of principles, but that it demands action, produces obedience and when faith wins, it produces fruit.

Understand that partial obedience is the same as disobedience. Obey the Lord in everything and never stray from His side.
-Nohemi Meléndez

-1 Samuel 15:22

“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

One day I needed some glue to be able to do something I needed to do something at the house. I went to the hardware store and found various types of glue. All of them had instructions this this: To ensure a strong bond the surface should be perfectly clean, free of dust.

Thinking about the instructions, I thought about how our hearts are at times unconnected from God. Why? Because our hearts aren’t clean. Pride, arrogance, wrath, selfishness, bad attitudes, jealousies and other sins impede a perfect union with God.

God knows that we can’t resist the temptation to sin on our own. If our hearts are not ready, we are united to God through Jesus Christ. That union doesn’t depend on whether or not we are perfect—it depends on Christ. Jesus joins us perfectly with God.
-Betty Hernández

-Colossians 2:2

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

Do you know when God releases His love? When you act in agreement to the knowledge of the Word of God.

If you have the answer regarding what love is and you do not act in agreement to what God says in His word, that love remains undeveloped and selfishness begins to reign in the heart, even though you are saved. This doesn’t please God.

Put into practice what the Word of God says and when you do it, the love of God will be perfected in your life.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-1 John 2:5-6

But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

What does love mean to you?

A few days ago I read a book on love. It says that for many people, it is an emotional ghost that quickly surfaces and then disappears with no warning. An illusion. Always sought but seldom found.

Sometimes we get confused about love. But we don’t need to be confused. The Word of God reveals clearly what love really is.

Study the Word carefully and you will find the answer.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-2 John 6

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

As we all know, God rejected Saul because of his disobedience. From the beginning, the decision for Saul, just like for the rest of us, was to follow his own plans or to accept with no reservations the plan of God.

God rejects our worship or service if we are not ready to obey Him. It is necessary to submit to His authority, putting aside all pride and the unwillingness to be transformed by the power of God, knowing that His presence is with us at all times. That is why we need to ask ourselves: What is the focal point of life? Is it a career, a sport, earning lots of money, health, studies. Or is it to obey and follow Jesus Christ?
-Betty Hernandez

-1 Samuel 15:22-23

But Samuel replied:
“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD ,
he has rejected you as king.”

What is the goal of devotion that is centered on God? It is to know God better day after day. Remember that at the end we will be judged according to our knowledge of the Lord and for how much we have allowed Him to manifest Himself in us.

Your life is defined by your desire to know God.
-Nohemi Meléndez

-Jeremiah 9:23-24

This is what the LORD says:

“Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
or the strong man boast of his strength
or the rich man boast of his riches,
but let him who boasts boast about this:
that he understands and knows me,
that I am the LORD , who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the LORD .

Yesterday was my father’s birthday and the people of our church threw a surprise party for him. This was the first time the church ever did anything for my father on his birthday.

I am thankful to God for his life and that he is healthy and also that my father has never left the Lord. I am also thankful for my mother who has helped my father in everything.

If you still have your parents with you, treasure them and honor them and you will have a rich reward in heaven.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

As young people our lives are filled with things we have to do, but we also have desires, wishes, and goals. Some of us like to dress well and buy clothes that are expensive and well made. Others desire a car, a house or success at school. We don’t realized that we are forgetting someone who is more important in our lives than all the rest and that someone is God. It is easy to put God aside and dedicate less time to Him, to go to church less often and perhaps stop doing these things. But above all else, it is necessary to seek God and spend time with Him.

There is a wonderful illustration in the Bible where Jesus tells His disciples “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4). Now apply this to your life because apart from our God it will be difficult to achieve the things we so desire.

Let’s not forget our God. He gives us life and He can also take it. He gives us strength and every good thing we have. He is the only one who can help us and give us victory in everything.
-Betty Hernández

-1 Samuel 2:6

“The LORD brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.

-James 1:7

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows

Did you know that when you come to the Lord, He puts a new heart in you? But unfortunately many have lost this great love for God and I have been realizing this as I observe the youth in worship in the youth services. Some of them have begun to worship as a matter of ritual.

But it should not be this way. If God gives us something new every day, our duty is to offer Him something new through our singing, prayers and even our Bible reading.

The Christian life is a life of joy, and not of walking around sad all the time. We are the youth. We have the strength, new strength in God. We can jump, sing with gusto, dance and be happy in the Lord and in the power of His strength. We are the strength of the church. I truly believe this. I hope you believe it too.
-Betty Hernández

-Ezekiel 11:19-20

I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.

-Isaiah 40:30-32

Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Loving is easy when people share your ideas, tastes, thoughts and attitudes, but it begins to be more difficult when you need to love those who have no love either for you or even for themselves. How many times have you found it difficult to love someone who has hurt you or offended you? But in spite of the fact that it is difficult to love someone like that, you need to do it because how many times have you done the same thing (hurt someone or offended someone) and you still want to be loved?

Jesus was the best example of love and it was through this love that He impacted the lives of thousands of people in the years He lived on earth and so His love needs be seen in our lives so we can be true followers of Christ. We need to obey His commandment to love one another and to keep His word, persevering in being true disciples of the one who gave His life in love for all of us.
-Betty Hernández

-John 13:34

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

I am in the Mexican equivalent of High School and in one month, the school year will end. But I am realizing the importance of something my father always mentions—humility. In these past semesters I have been number one in my classes. I don’t know how other countries grade the students but here in Mexico, the highest grade is a 10.0. Whenever I get a 10, I am reminded of the importance of being humble. And it is very important. One semester, my grades were lower. When my grades were high, I was filled with pride, but I thank God and my parents because they helped me through that time.

You might be wondering why I am sharing this. I share this to remind you that if you are in school and get good grades, remember the importance of humility.

Remember that to get ahead, you need to ask God to help you. Whenever I have a test, I pray about it and I ask my parents and friends to pray for me.

Perhaps you don’t get good grades. Don’t worry. If you ask God for wisdom, He will help you. But you have to ask and you will discover that He will answer.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Luke 14:11

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Did you know that God’s will for us is to live in holiness?

Our holiness involves many things and the most important is the soul. What are we doing to remain pure and clean before God? Have you ever thought of that? Many times we do things only for show thinking that no one will know, but I think you know that God knows. He knows all about you and you can’t hide from Him, and you can’t hide anything from Him.

Once your body is sanctified, what are you doing to keep your body pure? In 1 Corinthians 6:19 we are told that the body is the temple of God and if you don’t take care of your body and life, the Spirit of God is sad.

So if you are defiling your body with things you know you shouldn’t do, you need to stop. If you smoke, drink alcohol or abuse drugs, be aware of the fact that you are defiling God’s temple. Now in closing, I want to ask you a question. Do you want to go to heaven? Or do you prefer the opposite (hell)?

DON’T HURT YOUR BODY.
-Betty Hernández

-1 Thessalonians 4:3

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;

-Hebrews 12:14

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

There is a song that fills me with joy every time I put the cassette on. This song is called “Without Reservation” and the chorus goes like this: I will do it, I will obey You. Without reservation or condition, I will serve You.” (Words and music: Marco Barrientos, Jaime Beutel and Jason Hibdon, ©1999)

Whenever I listen to this song, I pray this: “Lord, when a person serves You with all his or her heart, it doesn’t matter who s/he meets, s/he ought to serve You because You are God of all the universe.

Let me tell you that when a person serves God with all his/her heart, the pressure of the world doesn’t matter, or if others are critical. Not even the circumstances that one is going through matter. Why? Because that person recognizes that God is always with him/her.

Remember that to serve God, you may have to go through some trials, but you can ask God to help you. He will help if you ask Him to help you.

Nohemí Meléndez

-Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men

How much do you love the work of the Lord?

Much has been said among Christians about when Peter denied Jesus when he really should have demonstrated his love for Him. What happened to Peter can happen to us. But whenever possible, take charge of the moment of weakness immediately and don’t wait until later. Remember that Peter recovered and stood up and preached Jesus with power and with the manifestation of miracles.

Young person, I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ daily asks us, Do you love me ________ (put your name here). If your answer is “Yes Lord”, then the next question is “Why don’t you do my work?”

I believe that we can so easily say “I love you Lord and You are King of my life. Have Your way in me. I am ready.” But our actions negate our words.

Young person, don’t waste anymore time. From now on, any time you tell God you love Him, pray that He will show you ways you can help in the work of the Lord or to be more precise, probably in your church. You might be the missing piece to bring about some important vision of the church. Don’t give up and don’t wait for someone to ask you to help. You can ask “How can I help?”.

Remember that whatever you do is not done to please other people, but to please God and you do it because you love Him.
-Betty Hernández

-John 21:15-17

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.

Though it cost all you have, get understanding” is what Solomon tells us in the book of Proverbs. (Proverbs 4:7)

Wisdom is the same as knowing the truth and how to apply it in any given situation. Understanding is knowledge, seasoned and modified by wisdom and intelligence.

Make wisdom a priority. Feed understanding. Accept that knowledge without wisdom and understanding is worth nothing.

Remember that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Proverbs 4:5-9

Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or swerve from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Esteem her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will set a garland of grace on your head
and present you with a crown of splendor.”

How would you feel if someone knew everything about you, including your deepest secrets?

If you think like the majority of the people, I think you would not like anyone to know that much about you. If someone truly knows you, including all your faults, your most embarrassing moments and your most hidden sins, they could think or say that you are not a nice person or one whom they could trust and maybe they would not want to spend time with you.

But, on the other hand, how would you feel if that only person who knows you so well inside and out loved you more than you could possibly imagine? That person is God, the only one who knows all about you. He knows the good, the ugly, all your thoughts, desires, dreams, successes and failures. He doesn’t love you because of who you are or for what you have done. He loves you simply for being who you are. This is the most perfect love that exists. When you accept His love, you have security. You no longer have to fear what others think. You no longer have to be wondering if you are accepted or not. Jesus loves you and His perfect love drives away fear and replaces it with freedom.

-Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

In Mexico many people have the wrong idea of what is the Gospel and there are many who have never even heard the word. I don’t know what it is like in other countries.

I want to give you a perspective of the Gospel that is easy to understand. Basically, the word “gospel” means “good news”. That is the way it is used in the New Testament. The Word speaks of different aspects of divine revelation.

Gospel: the good news that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and that He was raised from the dead for our justification and that all who believe in Him are justified.

Have you believed? If not, I invite you to believe and become part of the family of God and receive the blessings that come with that. If you are a believer, keep going in the faith, appreciating what Jesus did for you on the cross and teaching others what the “Gospel” is.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Romans 1:16

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

This past weekend was something very special for me because I saw a group of young people participating in leading praise and worship and in the preaching. This made me happy because in it, I saw God answering one of my prayers.

If there was a day my heart was sad for the lack of willingness to help that I saw in them or in not wanting to seek the grace of God, today my heart is overflowing with joy. I believe that what happened to me this past weekend is just the first step of what Jesus will do in our lives. I thank God for putting me in charge of the youth at my church.

Young person, if you are part of the leadership of your church, wait on God for the answer that you desire and don’t let remarks of others distract you. Keep looking to God and soon you will get the answer to your prayers.

Do you know what it means to know God? Knowing God means that you know that He honors His Word even more than His name. Never forget that God has promised you that He will fulfill His Word.

Remember to always obey the Word of God.

What date for you is the date you celebrate your mother?

Is it every May 10th, as here in Mexico, or the second Sunday of May as in the US? Is it on her birthday? Or do you celebrate your mother every day?

The best response would be the last one, since we as children should honor her for the love she gives us. How can you pay back the woman who wanted you to be born? With obedience and love—this is one way. Sometimes, we as children don’t like it when our mothers discipline us and perhaps at some point you wished your mother wasn’t around.

But we need to be careful with our thoughts and words. What would you do if you no longer had your mother at your side?

Today is a special day to tell her how much you love her, how much you appreciate the fact that she allowed you to be born, for all she has taught you, for all the ways she has taken care of you when you were sick or when you fell down and she took care of the hurts.

Today is the day to tell her. Perhaps tomorrow will be too late. If, for some reason or circumstance, no longer have your mother with you, don’t lose hope—Jesus is always with you.
-Betty Hernández

-Proverbs 31:10, 25-31

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Friendships make life enjoyable and make the difficult times lighter. Difficulties test them and strengthen them. That was the relationship among the three Jewish youth who were deported to Babylon together with Daniel.

The friendship of these youth was important to them, but they never let it take precedence over God in their lives, even when facing death. Together they defied in silence the order of the king Nebuchadnezzar to bow down and worship the idol that he had made of himself.

They shared a brave act, while others, who wanted to get rid of them, told the king of the three Jews who were disloyal. If this was true, Nebuchadnezzar couldn’t save their lives without embarrassing himself. It was the moment of truth—death was about to end their friendship. To give in a little would have allowed them to live and enjoy their friendship, serve God and the people while in this strange land. But they were so wise that they saw that that decision would have poisoned the conviction that they held so dearly: the importance of being loyal to God. The rest was victory.

When we leave God out of our important relationships, we have a tendency to hope that those relationships will satisfy the needs that only God can satisfy. Friends are useful, but they can’t satisfy our spiritual needs. Our relationship with God should be important enough to impact the other relationships we have, especially the relationship with our closest friends.

Remember that there is great strength in true friendship, but never leave God out of that friendship.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Daniel 3:16-18

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

What do you think of when you hear the word “hypocrites”?

Hypocrites are those who say they believe one thing, but their lives demonstrate something different. Have you ever done anything like that? I think we all have done it at one time or another. The word “hypocrite” means “an actor playing a part”. I can imagine that this is what Jesus had in mind when He talked about the religious hypocrites.

Hypocrisy is nothing new. In the days of Jesus just as today, the religious people tried to impress each other mutually by showing how spiritual each was. Hypocrites still go to church. Probably you know some people like that. They criticize others, are proud and self-sufficient. In addition, they pretend to be perfect and continue trying to prove they are something they really aren’t.

But Jesus can’t be fooled. So, what about us? What about you? How do your friends see you? Do your words and actions line up? Do you claim to believe one thing but you really live something else?

Let’s be careful. God knows our hearts and He knows our attitudes.He knows if we really want to please Him or we are looking for man’s approval.
-Betty Hernández

-Matthew 6:1-15

“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
” ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Do you know what faith is based on? Faith is based on the Word of God when circumstances seem to question the truth of His promises. Our ability to persevere to the end will depend on our willingness to let the Spirit cultivate in us this type of faith.

Understand that spiritual strength comes from waiting on the Lord.
-Nohemí Meléndez

-Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives strength to the weary

They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Did you know that God’s discipline is designed to restore the heart?

Perhaps at some time you have been disciplined for something and you were upset by it. It is important to understand something—after receiving direction from God we have to accept His correction and discipline. God had to discipline His people for their moral and spiritual rebellion and for their rejection of the warnings of the prophets. Correction should bring repentance and repentance brings restoration. The same prophets who declared the condemnation of God also announced the salvation of God. In the same way, God corrects us as His children so we can walk in the light of His justice.

How will you respond in these moments?

Are you disciplined or unable to be corrected?

-Hebrews 12:6

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Wednesday, May 5, 2004

I don’t know if you have ever read the book of Numbers. This book offers various important teachings that help a person grow before God. One teaching is to seek holiness. This is not something that we automatically reach by participating in religious activities, but it is a result of a dedicated study of God. All aspects of a life that is dedicated to God are important, from the attitude we have regarding the people of God to the attitude we have towards our redemption.

Spend time often in the Word of God. Make this time of the day a very important part of your life with the Lord. Seek peace with all and seek holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

Do you believe you live by faith or by what you see?

As children of God or Christians, God wants us to feed on His Word so that our faith grows and produces fruit. Never forget that the life with God is a life of faith. And what faith shows us not is a feeling, but belief and knowledge. It isn’t an emotion but a conviction. It isn’t an evidence but a proof.

Being a child of God has many advantages. One of them is that He will never leave you, forsake you even when you feel alone and sad and you feel that He is a million miles away. He is faithful with you and will never leave you.

-Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”

When you are sad, the thing you need to do is to seek God and then your heart will fill will joy. God, in His word tells us that He gives us hope with His words and comfort that comes from His lips will wipe away pain.

I don’t know what you have been going through in the past days, but be patient. God’s word says that all that comes to us in life is for our good. The breath that you need is in the Word of God. Seek it and you will find it.

May God richly bless you.

-John 16:20

I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.

But now, this is what the LORD says-
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

Do you what it means to be a Christian leader?

To be a Christian leader is to lead one person or a group of people in the name of Christ and in accordance with the principles that we find in the Scriptures. It means to guide others in the path of spiritual growth, growing in the likeness of Christ and for building up the church.

Leadership is supported in the Gospel, the work of Jesus and His sacrifice. And this is characterized by the humility of the one who guides and at the same time, serves. This person needs to be an example of holiness and needs to be completely given to the ministry. This person needs to trust others and know how to delegate. S/he needs to know how to give spiritual food and strength to others and help others grow spiritually.

Young person, keep going forward, leaving behind all you might think you need. Work with love for God and not man, not thinking about what others may say or think, especially those who want to make you doubt your leadership abilities.
